Male maturity shaped by early nutrition

Differences between the sexes affected by environment during first six months of life

EVANSTON, Ill. --- It seems the old nature versus nurture debate can't be won. But a new Northwestern University study of men in the Philippines makes a strong case for nurture's role in male to female differences -- suggesting that rapid weight gain in the first six months of life predicts earlier puberty for boys.

Males who experienced rapid growth as babies -- an indication that they were not nutritionally stressed -- also were taller, had more muscle and were stronger, and had higher testosterone levels as young adults. They had sex for the first time at a younger age and were more likely to report having had sex in the past month, resulting in more lifetime sex partners.

The researchers think that testosterone may hold the key to understanding these long-term effects.

"Most people are unaware that male infants in the first six months of life produce testosterone at approximately the same level as an adult male," said Christopher W. Kuzawa, associate professor of anthropology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and author of the study. "We looked at weight gain during this particular window of early life development, because testosterone is very high at this age and helps shape the differences between males and females."

The study provides more evidence that genes alone do not shape our fate.

"The environment has a very strong hand in how we turn out," Kuzawa said. "And this study extends that idea to the realm of sex differences and male biology."

The study found men, on average, tend to be taller and more muscular than females, and the magnitude of that difference appears to be the result of nutrition within the first six months of an infant male's life, according to the study.

"There is a perennial question about how important heredity is versus the environment as shapers of who we turn out to be," said Kuzawa. "In the last 20 years, a lot has been learned about a process called developmental plasticity -- how the body responds early in life to things like nutrition and stress. Early experiences can have a permanent effect on how the body develops, and this effect can linger into adulthood. There is a lot of evidence that this can influence risk of diseases like heart attack, diabetes and hypertension -- really important diseases."

Kuzawa and his collaborators applied the same framework in this study and found evidence that male characteristics -- such as height, muscle mass and testosterone levels as opposed to disease characteristics -- also relate back to early life developmental plasticity.

"Another way to look at it is that the differences between the sexes are not hard wired, but are responsive to the environment, and in particular to nutrition," Kuzawa said.

Testosterone has long been known to increase muscle mass and puts a person on a higher growth trajectory to be taller. The Northwestern study suggests that the age of puberty also is influenced by events in the first six months of life.

The study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Wenner Gren Foundation, was conducted among a group of 770 Filipino males aged 20 to 22 who have been followed their entire lives. Since 1983 a team of researchers in the United States and the Philippines (including Kuzawa for about the last 10 years) has been working to understand how early life nutrition influences adult health, such as risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

"Rapid Weight Gain After Birth Predicts Life History and Reproductive Strategy in Filipino Males" was published Sept. 13 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study's co-authors are Thomas W. McDade, associate professor of anthropology, Northwestern University, Linda S. Adair, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Nanette Lee, University of San Carlos of the Office of Population Studies in Cebu City, Philippines.

Bench press calculators are becoming an interesting tool in weight lifting. Several bench press calculators are now available online that will allow a person to calculate what their maximum bench press might be. I have to use the word "might" here, because the bench press calculator is really only guessing at a number, and while there may be logic behind the equation, its not close to being a perfect science. Still, the use of a bench press calculator can be a fun way to figure out what your maximum bench press might turn out to be if you put in the work to improve your daily repetitions on the bench press.

The way that these bench press calculators work is that they take your weight and the number of repetitions that you can do in one sitting, and work with those numbers to create a raw number. This new raw number is then called the maximum bench press, or more clearly, the most weight that you could then life in a single repetition on the bench press. On paper it is an interesting concept, where someone can lift weights to their hearts content, and then go to the bench press calculator to see what their max rep might be if they really wanted to try the heaviest weight that they could lift. Put into practice though, the results may vary from person to person.

As an example of how one of the bench press calculators works, let's take a look at the Muscle and Strength bench press max calculator on their web-site. First you enter the weight and then the number of reps you can do at that weight to get your raw number. For instance, if a person uses a weight of 250 pounds, and can do 5 reps, their max bench is calculated to be 291.75 pounds. That translates to that lifter being able to bench just over 291 pound if they were just doing one rep. If a person uses 200 pounds of weight and can do 10 reps, then it translates to a max bench of 266 pounds in one rep. So as you can see, it is an interesting tool, but it isn't one of those calculators that you would necessarily hang your hat on as being fact.

Just because a person can only do 10 reps on 200 pounds doesn't mean they can't lift more than 300 pounds, and likewise just because they can do 200, it does not mean that they could do more than 225 pounds in one lift. When it comes to bench press calculators there is always going to be a variance when it comes to lifting, and that is an important item to keep in mind if you want to give the bench press calculators a try. Keeping in mind that they give you a ballpark figure, they could prove to be quite useful, but don't just assume that you can lift that much weight just because the calculator says you can. Slowly increase your weight in a safe manner, and then the bench press calculator will serve you better.

Yankees What Happened To Our Don?

If Joe Girardi decides he had enough of the Yankees experience and goes to the Cubs, the Yankees can forget about Don Mattingly managing them.

The Dodgers hired Mattingly as their new manager after Joe Torre announced he won't return as the Dodger manager next year.

This is too bad. The Yankees need a manager who appreciates the game. They need a manager who won't overmanage. They need a manager who will not have an ego on gamedays.

Mattingly would fit the bill. Please do not talk about his lack of experience. Any manager can manage a team with the payroll the Yankees have.

If a manager has plenty of talent to work with he can get by. We saw that with Girardi last year.

The Yankees manager made dubious decisions when it came to pitching in October. Fortunately for him, his hitters bailed him out.

It also helped that CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Andy Pettitte managed to win games in October.

If Girardi was not blessed with talent he would just be another manager and nothing more.

Want to know how players look good? Look back to Boston's manager Terry Francona. Philadelphia sports fans perceived him as a dumb manager when he lost in Philly. Yet he is now viewed as a great manager because he won two championships in Boston.

Does a manager make that much of a difference? All a manager can do is have his team sharp when the game begins.

Other than that, it comes down to what the players do within the white lines.

There is a good reason the Yankees are not in a rush to sign Girardi to an extension. They know he is replaceable. If anything, he should be begging to stay on rather than using the Cubs as leverage.

That would be a bad strategy on Girardi's part, especially if the Yankees miss out on the playoffs for the second time in three years under his stewardship. Don't laugh at that prospect.

The Yankees are nicked up with injuries. Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner can't seem to move, Mark Teixiera's foot limits his ability to hit, and Alex Rodriguez has not been productive thanks to a hip issue.

Their hitters don't scare elite pitchers. The Yankees strike out often these days at a high ratio.

Outside of CC Sabathia, no one in the rotation scares anyone. The Yankees are banking on Andy Pettitte, but what if he can't be good enough after being activated from the disabled list?

The schedule does the team no favors. The Orioles, Rays, Blue Jays, and the Red Sox know what it takes to beat the Yankees this year.

With the Red Sox six games out in the division and six 1/2 games out for the wild card, they can make a run of their own. At this point, there's more trust on the Red Sox than the Yankees to make the playoffs.

What's alarming is Girardi is not responding to the situation well. He has been moody with reporters. He talked about how the pennant race is work. He has had a quick hook with the pitchers if they screw up.

Is this want the Yankees want to see from their leader?

This type of attitude rubs off on the players. Girardi was able to relax last year because his players were never hurt and they played great all year.

When there is first sign of trouble, the Yankees manager is tense.

It is not going to get any better next year. The Rays will take a step back with defections, but the Orioles, Blue Jays, and the Red Sox are not going anywhere. Expect those three teams to improve.

How will Girardi handle it? Do the Yankees trust him to lead? This year's experience will speak volumes about him.

We also question Girardi's bullpen use. It's nice he wants to rest his relievers, but this is September. Every game is important. If the Yankees lose these games, the Red Sox will gain more games.

The Yankees should be trying to win these games. The more they win, they can exterminate the Rays. Then, they can go rest their players.

That's how a team should do it. For Girardi to think the wild-card spot is a safety net, that's wrong. Nothing is guaranteed.

If this strategy costs his team the postseason, the Yankees should fire him outright.

Does anyone think Mattingly would do this? Don't think so. Rest assured, he would play to win the game and worry about the other stuff when he has to.

Plus, he would embrace the games in September instead of pouting like a spoiled brat.

Mattingly would have been a better choice to manage the Yankees when the team decided to end their relationship with Torre. He would have been a great choice to take over for Girardi.

It is the Yankees' loss.

They are stuck with Girardi or whoever for better or for worse.

The Dodgers need pitching, hitting, a great closer, a first baseman who can hit for power and the same at third, and probably a new center fielder and what do they end up with?

A new manager who has never managed before.

I love Don Mattingly as a player. With that steady career batting average of .307, nine gold gloves, an MVP Award and some batting titles - but can he transpose his personal winning attitude and baseball acumen to his team?

It is kind of scary if you are a Dodger fan.  Just this week he said he had no idea why the Dodgers were hitting so poorly. This from the Dodgers hitting coach.

In his one stint as manager a month or so ago when Torre was tossed from the game, he made a really stupid mistake when he went to the mound twice in the same trip.  Donnie Baseball either forgot or didn't know the rule.  Either way, I am glad he's gotten that one out of the way.

Listen, Mattingly may have learned a lot while working at the feet of one of the great managers of our time but it appears like a shot in the dark.  I know Joe Torre and you are no Joe Torre.

The Dodgers are a mess as everyone knows what with the owners' divorce proceedings which led to a slashed budget which led to no buying power in the off-season which led to a weakened squad that included a 5th starter with zero big league experience which led to no true back-ups for the weary and the wounded which led to an almost last place finish.

They need a miracle worker not a newbie manager who will be learning on the job.

I wish him well and hope he can pull this one out as easily as he could snare an errant throw in the dirt.

School: Back to school shopping ripoffs?

Back to School 2010 by Pacerboy4

Going back to school after a crippling or disfiguring accident can challenge the strongest survivor. If you have a child who has had the misfortune to have had an accident this summer prepare him or her for the inevitable stares and questions. Let them know that staying calm and polite even when others are not, will, in the end, be the best course of action. Be prepared to offer emotional support and be prepared to talk to teachers about the accident and your child's feelings.

I surfed through stories on the internet today that covered accidents in many countries and from many causes. Every thing from diving accidents that paralyzed the victims to lawnmower disasters that resulted in amputated legs. Many of these news articles or blogs referred to the challenges of going back to school. A commonality in these accounts caught my attention. Most of the victims remarked on how it felt to be stared at. Some were clearly changed in appearance, some were brain damaged, some paralyzed or otherwise maimed. The feeling of being "different" was common to them all. Other commonalities were accommodations for disabled which are not consistent or not adequate. Frustrations with time schedules getting between classes when using a wheel chair or learning to use new prosthesis were mentioned a few times as well.

In all of the instances the thing that stood out was the direct cause and effect of the quality of love and support from home on the quality of life at school. Parents helped their children by focusing on the courage of the child and on the improvements that were being made in the recovery process. Going back to school was seen by the most successful families as a return to a more normal quality of life. Although some parents registered grief and despair in private moments the tone of their interactions with their children leaned toward the pragmatic and supportive role. Telling a child the truth is important, they all agreed, and then finding a way forward together made the difference between remarkable recoveries and stagnation of progress.

Having a talk with your child before school starts about what to expect helps prepare the child to handle the looks and the comments. Sometimes a shocked question such as "Oh my gosh Mark, what happened to you?" is simply an expression of concern and your child can deal with it easier if they have role played that scenario with you.

Tell your child that starting back to school will be hardest in the first few days. When other students get over the shock and have their questions answered things will settle down a bit. Do not hesitate to ask for counseling for your child. Do not hesitate to participate in counseling as a family. When a child suffers disfigurement or loses a limb the whole body image is shattered and has to be rebuilt. Paralyzing accidents or amputations can destroy hopes and goals for the future. A good counselor can help the child and the parent come to grips with the realities of the new limitations. They can also help your child re-establish hope, build new coping skills, and encourage realistic goals.

When your child does go back to school encourage them to stretch to their full potential and keep raising the bar. Find stories of people with similar injuries who went on to overcome adversities and excel at life goals. Discuss these role models with teachers, your child, and your child's friends.

Be prepared to intervene if your child is teased, bullied or shunned due to the physical changes caused by the accident. Going back to school should not be an ordeal.....a challenge, yes.....an ordeal...No.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.

Top Yahoo New Stories

One clue about how a society is going and what direction it's taking is advertising. People and companies spend fortunes in advertising every year, every month, every week. Just a cursory look at what's being advertised will tell you something about the society we are living in and its values. Another indicator is to see what the mainstream media is paying attention to. That is even scarier and more obnoxious to me than the advertising indicators. In a sense, they both tell us what is important to citizens and what the public is buying in terms of both physical items and social and political concerns.

Look at the news. It used to be that the news was really news--something that was going to affect our lives politically and socially. Every time a news story gets "hot" it is sucking the life from stories that are important in less sexy, less "tabloid" issues. The impending collapse of social security and Medicare, the horrendous income tax mess, any real discussion about how to deal with the Middle East--all these are blithely shoved aside by a constant and repulsive explosion of parroting broadcasts about Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears and the death of Anna Nicole Smith. I find this not only repulsive and obnoxious, but, frankly, very scary. More and more important issues are ignored while tabloid issues take front and center. More and more we see the same phrases bandied about by newscasters who cry "tragic" with regard to Anna Nicole Smith and "hot item" with regard to Paris Hilton. And these stories go on for weeks, taking up entire news cycles that ignore more important issues. The frightening thing about this is that evidently people are watching this junk, and this is really scary to me because it means they're not demanding that news broadcasters get back to reporting about matters of some importance. In a sense, the news itself has become one big advertising medium because tabloid issues sell papers and media.

The news has always been in love with negative reporting, but more and more, we see an increase in reportage about high profile sports figures who behave like thugs. It is as if these people are important to our lives and our futures. There has always been a symbiotic relationship between the public and the media. If people would turn off the irrelevant news and stop taking papers who advertise garbage reporting, this would become more balanced, we'd begin to see some interesting and really important subjects begin to appear. If I hear one more time the phrase "global warming" I'll throw up. Neither the media nor politicians have allowed alternate points of view on the issue of climate change to have any voice whatsoever. It's as if all those dissenting with the argument about human causes for climate change are dismissed with a frightening stubbornness that echoes the controlled media of past fascist regimes. Silence any opposition by ignoring it and magnify only one point of view. This was the method used by Hitler and by Mussolini in pre-war Germany and Italy to convince whole populations of one particular point of view, and it's quite frightening and horrendous. I find that any time we see the media broadcasting only one point of view we're in danger of being manipulated for political and social reasons that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Now onto advertising. Advertisers are constantly touting Viagra and many drugs that emphasize sexual performance. Sexy women with tight pants who have become more and more "tough" and less and less feminine sell cars. I have really noticed that prime time has become dominated by Viagra ads, ads for drugs to make us sleep, keep us happy, make our kids less disruptive in school. Then there are the ads from loudmouth lawyers who scream that they can retrieve money for us from "damages lawsuits" regarding any number of things. Have a lung disease? Call Lawyer A. Have a kid with Cerebral Palsy or autism? Call Lawyer B. What about a heart condition or death? Call Lawyer C, who can make a case it was caused by anti-depressants or any number of other things. In short, advertising at the most heavily watched prime time is dominated by ads that sell sex, lawsuits and drugs. If that doesn't give anyone pause to wonder what the American public is buying, I don't know what is.

Frankly, these trends are not only obnoxious; they're disturbing and quite frightening. What they show us about ourselves and our willingness to pay attention to these ads and to care about the useless tabloid "reporting" is a reflection of our willingness to accept whatever is thrown our way without question. They are more than just passing trends. They are a reflection of a society that is losing cohesion and decent moral standards. They are, in fact, indicators of the increasing selfishness, self-centered crassness, and indifference to our common unity of purpose and principles.
